Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are among the most common issues that bring people into counselling.
A 2020 poll of Canadians found that 22% were coping with a diagnosis of depression and an additional 20% with a diagnosis of anxiety. Anxiety and depression are increasingly occurring in youth. Among young adults, 10% reported having experienced depression at some point in their youth, while 7% reported considering suicide.
It is not uncommon to see anxiety and depression occurring together – fortunately similar treatment approaches can lead to improvements in both conditions. Underlying factors such as trauma, biology, heredity, core beliefs, and stress can all contribute to the development of anxiety and depression.
Counselling for anxiety and depression may include looking at how you view yourself and the world, concepts of self-acceptance, motivation, perfectionism, social anxiety, negative automatic thoughts, experiences of panic attacks, and acute or chronic trauma. In the treatment of anxiety and depression I focus on introducing new perspectives, experimenting with new approaches, and challenging the brain’s established patterns of thinking.
I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars.
